Blogmas Day VI: K-drama/ Korean Show Recommendations for Beginners

 Hello, hello!

Welcome to another day of Blogmas on this little blog. Today's post is for those of you, who want to get on to the K-drama/ Korean TV series bandwagon and, perhaps, find the hundreds of options on Netflix overwhelming.

I was you. In fact, I still am you in many ways. I have taken baby steps in my Korean series journey and these are tried-and-tested series that I watched and LOVED!

Let's start with the genre that dominates K-drama- romance!

Crash Landing On You

A South Korean heiress quite literally crash lands in North Korean territory whilst paragliding. There she meets a straight laced, honest and restrained North Korean army captain. Opposites attract. Sparks fly. Add in a cast of super-sweet supporting actors and you have an adorable romantic drama that will make you fall in love with the genre! Highly, highly recommend!

Hometown Cha Cha Cha

A hardworking, serious and Type A dentist moves to a charming seaside town to start over when she quits her high-profile Seoul practice over reporting her seniors' corrupt practices. There she meets someone who is, guess what, dramatically different from her. Chief Hong, as Du-Sik is called by the townsfolk, is a jack-of-all-trades. He lives his life at his own pace by doing a number of odd jobs to help the townsfolk. The two of them clash and then love blooms. This is the perfect cosy show to watch this time of the year. All the feels of sweet small town folks, a slow and happy life and, of course, a great love story!

The King: Eternal Monarch

We are still in the romance territory but now we are tiptoeing slightly into sci-fi! Yup. A romantic sci-fi drama. The King: Eternal Monarch tells the story of two Koreas in parallel universes. In one, we have the Kingdom of Corea spearheaded by our King- Lee Gon- a maths geek and all-round good guy and in the 'real world' (our real world), we have the Republic of Korea, where Police Lieutenant Ta-eul is busy catching criminals. Bound by a mysterious event of 25 years ago, Lee Gon travels to Ta-eul's universe and finds her. What are these parallel universes? Who wants to use these different worlds to create chaos in the Kingdom of Corea? An engaging series if you want something that is not purely a romantic drama.

Beyond Evil

My first Korean crime thriller and what a fantastic one this is! Beyond Evil is a serial killer cop caper. Someone has been murdering young women for almost 20 years in a small town. When the local misunderstood cop's niece is the latest victim, his past and present catch up with him in the most awful way. A team of two police officers- as different as chalk from cheese- set off to solve these crimes and in the process unearth more than they bargained for. With phenomenal performances, great writing and a twist-y plot, Beyond Evil is absolutely riveting!

Squid Game

The most watched show on Netflix deserves this title for a reason. An absolutely horrifying, riveting, brilliant thriller! Watch it, watch it, watch it! You won't regret it!

Hell Bound

A sci-fi (is it though?)/ paranormal (is it though?) thriller that is taking the world by storm right now! Three hell hounds (or are they?) drag sinners to hell at an appointed date and time while the whole world watches. Who are these creatures? Why is this happening? What sins are being punished? Can any sinner be saved? An absolutely interesting series that has gotten everyone scratching their heads and waiting for Season 2! Watch it!

So, these are some Korean shows you can start with. Pick any depending on the genres you like and start watching! All these shows are available on Netflix!

Enjoy!
