Hey, hey,
As the title suggests, here are our Top 10 crime fiction/ thriller/ mystery books of 2023!
This year has been a good one for myster/ crime fiction/ thriller lovers because there has been such a nice little variety of books/ stories within the broad genre.
So, without any further ado, let's get into it, shall we?
Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson: Nine friends visit a country home. Two are found murdered by an axe. 20+ years later, a young amateur detective attempts to solve this cold case. A really engrossing, fun book about friendship, friend-group dynamics and such. Review can be found here.
Villainy by Upamanyu Chatterjee: A fantastic, twisty, immersive book about an old crime and its long shadows. Very well written and you can find the detailed review here.
The Trees by Percival Everett: Is an absolute 5-star must-read. When some racists in a small southern (American) town are found murdered, the body of a Black man, who resembles the victim of a hate crime, is found at each of the scenes. What is going on? Is this something supernatural? Or is someone, finally, correcting age-old injustices? A truly fantastic read!
Twelve Secrets by Robert Gold: Two young boys were killed by two teenaged girls in the 90s. In the present day, another murder, similar to those of the boys, is committed in the same little town. Old secrets and the truth come slowly spilling out. A truly fantastic book if you enjoy cold cases and realistic crime solving. Review here.
Homecoming by Kate Morton: Is about families, family secrets and a tragic murder of a whole family. A must-read for those who enjoy historical fiction, reading about community dynamics in small towns and mother-child relationships. Review here.
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden: This book was the winner of the Goodreads 2023 Thriller Award and I can see why! This is an interesting, twisty, edge-of-your-seat book about controlling husbands, domestic violence and such. Full review can be found here.
The Trap by Catherine Ryan Howard: Is a fantastic, thrilling, moving and heartbreaking book. A girl, whose sister was taken by a serial killer, sets herself up as a trap to find him and bring him to justice. A really interesting premise and book. Full review can be found here.
The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman: This is the fourth book in the Thursday Murder Club series and is very good. Love that the series continues to be interesting and that this book was set outside of the retirement community that our key protagonists live in. Full review can be found here.
The Only One Left by Riley Sager: Is an immersive, interesting and expansive murder mystery that moves from the 1920s to the 1980s. One of Sager's better books! Full review can be found here.
The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith: A book about a murder in a cult! Need I even say more?! Full review can be found here.
Hope you do read some of these! If you do, let me know your thoughts! Or if you have any other murder mysteries or crime thrillers to recommend, do that as well!
