Hello, hello,
We come to you today with the very highly anticipated list of our favourite thrillers/ crime fiction books of 2024! This is what a lot of you have been waiting for, so, without any further ado, let's get into it!
The Gathering by CJ Tudor: If you are a fan of vampire fiction and enjoy thriller, then is the perfect book for you to pick up! Set in a world where vampires (called vampyrs in this book) are known to exist and, seemingly, co-exist with humans, there is a murder of a 15-year-old boy in a small town in Alaska and a cop is sent from the capital to investigate. An atmospheric, interesting and engaging thriller. Full review can be found here.
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore: One of the best books I've read this year. It is a historical crime thriller book set between 1975 and, then, the late 1980s. It is based in a summer camp where a little boy goes missing in 1975 and then, years later, his younger sister goes missing as well. A very atmospheric, immersive thriller that delves into the lives of women and the ways in which they have to "adjust", "tolerate" situations they've been thrust into. Full review can be found here.
The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean: A missing teenager returns after two years, presumed to have escaped her captor, and doesn't provide any clear details of who'd taken her and where she was held. A driven cop, whose own sister was murdered twenty years ago is determined to solve Ellie's disappearance and find the man who'd taken her. A really great thriller. Full review can be found here.
One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware: A slasher type thriller in which couples from the UK participating in a reality show find themselves being killed off one by one as a storm leaves them abandoned on a remote island. A fast-paced read but do beware that this is in no way "inspired by" or a "homage" to And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Full review is here.
Profile K by Helen Fields: This is a very different book within the thriller genre. It involves a profiler, of sorts, who identifies a violent sociopath based on the profiling test this person took in order to apply to a university. However, everyone at her workplace is dismissive of her fears that he may murder someone, so, she decides to try and find this guy. A really great, twisty, thrilling book.
Some Murders in Berlin by Karen Robards: Set during World War 2 in Berlin, this is a fast-paced serial killer story that is just so interesting and unputdownable! Highly recommend it!
We Solve Murders by Richard Osman: This is the first book in a new series by Richard Osman, known for his Thursday Murder Club series. We Solve Murders involves a father-in-law/ daughter-in-law duo of crime solvers, who solve a series of influencer murders all across the globe. An interesting start to a new series and is definitely worth reading.
Tallowwood by NR Walker: In a small town in Australia, the remains of a young man are found in the woods. His cause of death and the artefacts found on him are similar to the murders of several gay men in Australia since the 1970s. The local police team along with another senior officer, with a personal connection to the case, go about bringing justice to these dead men, whose deaths until now were written off as a suicide. A really nicely done, heartbreaking and interesting book. Available for free with a Kindle Unlimited Subscription.
The Treasure Hunters Club by Tom Ryan: A small town in coastal Nova Scotia, rumours of a pirate's treasure, multiple deaths of people connected to it and a young girl, an aspiring author and a man with a new inheritance are at the centre of this mystery. The events take place in the 1930s and then in the 1980s to present day. A really immersive, interesting read about secrets, greed and family histories.
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera: Two best friends went to a wedding and only one came back with no memory of what happened. The other friend turned up dead. Now, years later, a famous podcaster wants to tell the surviving friend's story and also, try to figure out what happened to the dead girl. A nicely done thriller, which is not very obvious.
If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay: An interesting, fast-paced thriller about a young man's quest to prove himself innocent after his girlfriend is kidnapped whilst they were in a popular "make out" spot the night of their prom. He is convinced she is still out there and is sent on a wild goose chase to find her and save her life. A bit different from the usual thrillers but very interesting.
I Found You by Lisa Jewell: This is an amnesia trope thriller, where a man is found wandering on a beach with no recollection of who is he and where he is from and what he is doing on that beach. He is found by a single mom of two and she helps him piece together his past and the traumatic events from nearly two decades ago that had happened on this very beach. A really great thriller with a lot of nostalgia.
