Hello Loves!
I am a big fan of all things Kid Lit. I believe that a good book that's written for kids works just as well for adults. A book that teaches a child via a story will have a similar effect on an adult or at least bring them some much needed comfort.
I read a lot of Children's Books, when I have a hard day or week, I find myself turning to the softness of a well written Children's Book.
Here are my absolute favourites from 2024.
1. Small Saul & 2. Larf by Ashely Spires: These books are so wholesome and wonderful and warm and fuzzy and so so so cute. Larf is about a Big Foot looking for a friend and Small Saul is a little pirate. My heart! I love these books and made my sister read them right after I finished them. So so so good. The art is lovely too. Highly recommend.
3. Mukesh Opens a Zoo by Ruskin Bond: What list of favourite children's books will ever be complete without Bond on the list. This little book was funny and full of misadventures and full of animals big and small. A fun read and Bond is always a good time.
4. Zardozi by Debasmita Dasgupta: A wonderful tale about a boy and his love and talent for embroidery. The message of this book is so important, it deals with how hard we as a society enforce gender roles on kids. How something as simple and uncomplicated as hobbies can be seen through a lens of gender and what a boy should or shouldn't be interested in. The art was lovely too. Highly recommend.
5. How Bamboo Got its Bounty by Sudha Murty: I started my year with this book. A story about how the humble bamboo is so useful and how it came to possess such bounty. Sweet and beautiful.
6. Homeland My Father Dreams of Palestine by Hannah Moushabeck: God, this book was beautiful and stirring and moving and so important to read right now with what's being done to Palestine and Palestinians. I loved this book so so much. A book full of longing and homesickness and love. So good. Pick it up please.
7. Sona Sharma The Very Best Big Sister by Chitra Soundar, Art by Jen Khatun: A sweet and wholesome book about a little girl who's just been promoted to being a big sister. A book about the joys and occasional pains of adding a sibling to a family. I adored it and read two other books by the same author I enjoyed very much.
8. Into the Uncut Grass by Trevor Noah, Art by Sabina Hahn: A simple tale about a young boy chafing at the unjust rules (according to him) set by his mother. So he and his bear make an escape into the garden and then beyond. He meets some curious creatures and has some little adventures or two. Fun and beautiful.
9. The Orange Shoes by Trinka Hakes Noble, Art by Doris Ettlinger: A very sweet and full of heart book about a girl who doesn't have much but doesn't let that get her down. It's a story about cherishing what is important and not letting money or the lack of it bring you down. The art was gorgeous too. You can read it for free if you have a Kindle Unlimited membership.
10. Kolam Kanna by Vibha Batra: Read this back in January and it was such a delightful book. A story about friendship and community and of course kolam making. A very wonderful and warm and inspiring little book that's perfect for kids and adults like.
